Call for Submissions: Special NNI Issue Exploring All Aspects of Aircraft Noise

We are excited to announce an open call for articles on all facets of aircraft noise for the March 2024 Noise News International (NNI) Special Issue on Aircraft Noise. This initiative seeks to bring together a diverse range of perspectives and expertise to shed light on one of the most critical challenges facing the environmental noise control today.

Aircraft noise, a pervasive issue in modern aviation, encompasses the sound generated by aircraft mainly during takeoff and landing. While aviation has revolutionized global connectivity and commerce, the accompanying noise pollution has emerged as a significant concern for communities living near airports and for the environment at large. In recent years, the aviation industry, in collaboration with regulatory bodies, has made substantial strides in mitigating aircraft noise. Advancements in engine design, the adoption of quieter technologies, and improved operational procedures have all contributed to reducing the impact of aviation-related noise on communities. Additionally, the implementation of stringent noise regulations represents promising avenues for further progress. The exploration of alternative propulsion systems such as electric turbo fans or open rotor engines may at the other hand form challenges in combining sustainability with further noise reduction.

We invite submissions across a wide spectrum of article types, including:

  • Case Studies: Real-world examples highlighting successful noise reduction initiatives, community engagement strategies, or innovative technologies that have made a positive impact.
  • Technical Articles: Explorations of the engineering and technological advancements aimed at minimizing aircraft noise, including studies on quieter engines, aerodynamic improvements, and novel materials.
  • Policy and Regulation: Analysis of current and proposed noise regulations, their effectiveness, and potential areas for improvement. Perspectives on international collaborations and best practices are also encouraged.
  • Environmental Impact: Investigations into the environmental consequences of aircraft noise, including effects on people, wildlife, and ecosystems, and air quality.
  • Community Perspectives: Opinions and personal accounts from individuals and communities affected by aircraft noise. Insightful narratives on the challenges faced and potential solutions are welcomed.
  • Future Trends and Innovations: Forward-looking articles on emerging technologies, research endeavors, and visionary approaches poised to revolutionize the field of aircraft noise reduction.

Submission Guidelines:

The March 2024 Issue of NNI is going to be a special issue that will examine the specific topic of aircraft noise, and we would like to hear from you! If you are interested in contributing to the conversation please email your submissions to the editor at: kingea@tcd.ie

Both short-form commentaries and long-form technical articles are welcome, especially those related to major developments in the field, legislation, research gaps, control strategies, etc. Submission should be written in MS Word, or similar, between 500-3000 words, and graphics are welcome. For consideration, submissions should be received by February 28 2024.

We eagerly await your contributions and look forward to advancing the discourse on aircraft noise in the global aviation community.
