See What’s Planned for INTER-NOISE 2024
The French Acoustical Society and the organizing committee are pleased to host the 53rd International Congress and Exposition on Noise Control Engineering in Nantes, France, on 25-29 August 2024. The congress will favor rich scientific interaction and strong social links among experts in noise control engineering.
Nantes (France) is a fast-growing city on the French Atlantic coast. With its booming economy and thriving cultural scene, Nantes is one of the new up-and-coming European destinations. Known for its eclectic sights and architecture and its quality of life recognized by the European Green Capital label, Nantes regularly comes first among the most livable cities.
The conference is being hosted at La Cité Nantes Congress Centre, a world-class convention center in the heart of the city, within walking distance of the train station, hotels, and historic places. It is located 20 minutes from the international airport.
Program Structure
The conference program is structured to maximize scientific discussions, placing the scientific exchange between researchers and engineers, from academic or industrial origins, at the heart of the event. It includes:
- 117 parallel technical sessions, focused both on the core noise topics and the Jules Verne theme
- 6 plenary and keynote lectures also covering topics related to both usual and Jules Verne theme
- 11 poster sessions, with flash presentations
- 30 exhibitor workshops, with no other session in parallel
- 68 session discussion slots spread in the technical program to encourage exchanges between delegates
An industrial exhibition is organized at the center of the congress venue, facilitating interactions between exhibitors and attendees.
Technical visits to attractive industrial sites and experimental installations are available to delegates.
Congress Theme: From Jules Verne’s world to multi-disciplinary approaches for Acoustics & Noise Control Engineering
The technical program not only integrates sessions on the usual topics of Inter-Noise congresses but also gathers contents around the universe of Jules Verne, born in Nantes in 1828. His adventure novels, known throughout the world, evoke scientific progress and technological projections, giving rise to the science fiction genre. The multi-disciplinary vision built by Jules Verne, between literature and science, inspires us to introduce special contents in the program, allowing exchanges on the different forms of multi-disciplinary approaches in the noise control context.
These contents will typically consist of technical sessions, happenings, and discussion workshops to raise awareness among scientists of the relevance of multi-disciplinary vision when considering a noise control problem. Multidisciplinary approaches provide keys to apprehending the sound challenges of the city of the future: sound impact of new sound sources and tomorrow’s transport modes, acoustic data representation and mapping, perception of soundscapes and their impact on uses and behaviors in urban areas, art, and acoustics.
Distinguished Lectures
The INTER-NOISE 2024 team is delighted ot host the following keynote speakers:
Plenary lecture: Ocean Noise and its Effects on Marine Mammals
Presenter: Christine Erbe, Director, Centre for Marine Science and Technology (CMST), John Curtin Distinguished Professor, School of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Curtin University, Perth, WA, Australia Christine Erbe is the Director of the Centre for Marine Science and Technology (CMST) at Curtin University in Perth, Australia, and the Director of the Centre of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (COEST) at Curtin Mauritius. With a background in Physics (M.Sc., Dortmund University) and Geophysics (Ph.D., University of British Columbia), she is studying marine soundscapes, underwater noise generation and propagation, marine bioacoustics, and the effects of noise on animals. She is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, Board member of the International Commission for Acoustics, and member of the intersessional expert group on underwater noise and light pollution of the International Seabed Authority. She chaired the international conference series on the Effects of Noise on Aquatic Life for several years. She has worked on International Standardization Organization (ISO) working groups on underwater noise and on the scientific committee to assess operations in Antarctica for the German Environmental Protection Agency.
Plenary lecture: Advanced Characterization of Urban Sound Environments
Presenter(s): Arnaud Can, Research Director, Joint Research Unit in Environmental Acoustics (UMRAE), Gustave Eiffel University, Nantes, France
Pierre Aumond, Researcher, UMRAE, Gustave Eiffel University, Nantes, France
Dr. Arnaud Can is a researcher in environmental acoustics at the Gustave Eiffel University, in the Joint Research Unit in Environmental Acoustics (UMRAE). He also holds a part-time position of associate professor in Ghent University. His research interests deal with (i) the characterization of urban noise environments, including participatory and citizen-based approaches, and (ii) the evaluation of the links between mobility and urban sound environments, relying on mobility and road traffic modeling at different spatial scales. He is currently the coordinator of the ANR SYMEXPO and ANR SONOREZE II projects, and the animator of the axe “Urban Sound Environments” at the Research Federation IRSTV (CNRS FR2488).
Dr. Pierre Aumond, a researcher in environmental acoustics at Gustave Eiffel University’s UMRAE laboratory, is dedicated to understanding the interplay between the physics and perception of urban sound environments. He actively contributes to the development of numerical modeling methodologies for urban soundscapes and serves as the main animator of NoiseModelling, an open-source noise mapping too
There will also be the following keynote lectures
- Listening to Simulations: Audio-rate Virtual Acoustics and Sound Synthesis, from Stefan Bilbao
- From the Laboratory to the Field: The Development of In-Situ Measurements on Noise Barriers in Europe, from Massimo Garai
- The Opportunities and Challenges in Additively Manufacturing Acoustical Materials, from Bhisham Sharma
- A Child Perspective on Noise Exposure and Health Effects – Challenges and Strategies, from Kerstin Persson Waye
Technical Visits
The INTER-NOISE team are excited to offer three technical visits:
- Visit #1 – Jules Verne climatic wind tunnel and PULSE laboratory (CSTB)
- Visit #2 – Major facilities of the Université Gustave Eiffel
- Visit #3 – IRT Jules Verne
Note that re-registration is a must for these, as spaces are limited, and the tours are sure to be fully booked!
Exhibition
The industrial exhibition will be in the heart of the Inter-Noise 2024 congress, located in the Great Hall of La Cité Nantes Congress Centre, the nerve center of the congress. All 72 available spots have now been reserved – so it promises to be a great exhibition. And we’re excited to announce that this year, there is the possibility to reserve exhibitor workshops scheduled at dedicated times that do not overlap with the scientific conferences.
Social Event
The Magmaa food hall, in the heart of Nantes’ Quartier de la Création, is a gourmet address supported in particular by Nantes Métropole. It features restaurateurs offering a variety of cuisines, from pizza to South Korean flavors, revisited bistro cuisine, fused South American flavors, Mediterranean street food and burgers in different versions. The Congress evening will feature culinary specialties from French-style chefs, accompanied by live music.
With other events planned through the week – including Young Professional Lunch, Woman in noise control lunch, a PhD Market, Flash Talk Challenges, an exciting accompanying person program, a Jazz & Science concert at the opening ceremony (Ophonius Quintett Jazz & Sciences) and a jam session opened for all musicians delegates, amongst many others, we hope to see you in Nantes for INTER-NOISE 2024.
